The future of social networking on mobile phones (video)
At the AlwaysOn Summit at Stanford University, moderator Adam Zawel of INmobile.org leads a discussion on mobile social networking.
He also asks the panel if the trend will be slow to progress in the US as opposed to other parts of the world. Panellists include Mauro del Rio of Buongiorno, Babur Ozden of Berggi and Kamar Shah of Nokia.

Social networking is an addiction. People who connect to the world through the Internet most often do two things without fail. First, checking out any popular search engine like Google, Yahoo or MSN Live Search, and secondly accessing social networks like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Orkut, etc.
By identifying the huge demand for mobile Internet, social networks are therefore keeping a close eye on how they can leverage the mobile phones to popularize their service even more. For example, MySpace has brought its video streaming to the wireless device, while Facebook now has its own mobile game arcade to entertain its users. Also, Twitter is used heavily by users to keep updating about what they are currently doing while being out.
As per the latest figures released by telecom service provider Orange, an enormous 166 million social networking website pages are accessed every month by its users through their mobile devices. Consumers who stay out of their home for most of the time can be seen accessing Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and Bebo to know what their friends are doing and also to share what they are doing. The research revealed that average users check their profiles over eight times a day (260 times every month).
What is the future of mobile social networking?
As last week was a lot about social networking and mobile social networking in the media - today we ask our Opinion Leaders about what they think the future of mobile social networking is. There were already many interesting responses. See this link for more of them.
I’d say
- Accessing social networks with a mobile will be bigger than via PC within two years
- Overall, they’ll become less important as a percentage of mobile web traffic, as other types of mobile website get discovered and used
- Look out for a huge growth and therefore influence from emerging markets. Already Indonesia, South Africa and The Philippines are huge markets
- Advertising will emerge as the primary (but not the only) revenue driver.
