Mobile social networking sees annual growth of over 150%
Mobile social networking grew by 152% between November 2007 and November 2008 in Western Europe, according to ComScore.The figures show that in November 34% of mobile social network users in Western Europe accessed social media exclusive of all other mobile web content.
The UK has the highest penetration of mobile social networking at 9%, nearly triple that of Germany, where the activity is the least popular at 3.3% penetration.

Mobile social networking use grows 182% over 2007
The volume of U.S. wireless subscribers who accessed social networks via mobile device increased 182 percent between September 2007 and October 2008 according to a new consumer study conducted by research firms The Kelsey Group and ConStat. In all, 9.6 percent of U.S. subscribers ages 18 and over connected with a social network via mobile handset in October 2008, compared to just 3.4 percent in September 2007.

Is it time for social networks grow up?
That mobile is increasingly used for browsing is undisputed however it’s my firm belief that the rise and rise of social networking is a key factor inspiring more and more people to browse on mobiles, hand-helds and other devices. As Opera’s State of the Mobile Web Report said back in April 2008 “…almost 40% of traffic worldwide is to social networks. In some countries, such as the United States, South Africa and Indonesia, the social Web accounts for more than 60% of the traffic.”

Social Networking Drives Mobile Investment
Three-quarters of mobile operators say they plan to invest in mobile social networking and mobile applications over the next 12 months, according to a study from Direct2Mobile conducted on behalf of Airwide Solutions.
Mobile broadband is not far behind with 65 percent of operators expecting to make investments over the next 12 months, followed by location-based services, IM based services and the mobile Internet.
Social networking is viewed by most operators as the main driver of both P2P and A2P consumers messaging volume. Operators want to capitalize on the success of social networking and ensure that SMS is the primary way for exchanging messages and delivering status updates on both mobile and fixed-Internet social networking sites.

Mobile Social Networking Evolves
Easy-to-use smartphone interfaces, like BlackBerry and iPhone, have given mobile social networking a big boost. A recent Nielsen survey showed social networking was the fastest growing sector of mobile Internet use from November 2007 to November 2008.
“Over 300 million SMSs were sent just from social networking sites in Q3 of 2008,” said Jerry Rocha, senior director of Mobile Media and Advertising at Nielsen Mobile. Mobile convergence applications are popping up faster than users can Twitter, chirp and chat about them, which appears to be broadening the playing field for social networks big and small. People are connecting with one another on their mobile phones, and they’re doing it in increasingly sophisticated ways.
Mobile social networking on the rise
Social networking is still the most popular online activity for North American mobile web users, according to a new report.
The study by Openwave Systems revealed that Facebook and MySpace represent the top two search queries on Google and Yahoo!'s respective mobile search services.
MySpace appears to be more popular with mobile web users than Facebook, however, receiving 46 per cent more hits per session on average than its rival.
Openwave Systems said this could mean that MySpace will soon become the preferred method of mobile communication for some users and could displace several of the most popular email services.
It added that the continuing popularity of social networking could further represent "a unique opportunity" for mobile operators to form partnerships with social media sites and generate incremental revenues from messaging on these websites.
